The 2019 Kia Sorento Goes Head to Head with the 2018 Toyota Highlander

The three-row crossover segment is very competitive, and our Kia Sorento isn't the only option for shoppers to check out. On this page, we'll compare the Sorento to the Toyota Highlander and show you why ours is the one you'll want to buy or lease.

Interior

  • Long trips won't be an issue for your passengers! The Sorento's second-row has an inch more legroom than the Highlander and the Sorento's third-row has a whopping four extra inches!
  • The Highlander seats up to eight passengers on most trims, whereas the Sorento seats up to seven. Eight passenger seating is tight, and you can see the Highlander already lacks legroom. That said, one trim does get a helpful captain's seat, 7-passenger configuration.

Performance

  • The Sorento has two engines: a 2.4L with 185 horsepower and a 3.3L V6 with 290 horsepower. The 2.4L can tow up to 2,000 pounds and the V6 up to 3,500 pounds.
  • The Highlander has a similar engine lineup. The 2.7L has 185 horsepower and the 3.5L V6 has 295 horsepower. The V6 can tow up to 5,000 pounds, though the smaller engine can only tow up to 1,500 pounds.

Technology

  • All Sorento's come with Apple CarPlayâ„¢/Android Autoâ„¢ and touchscreens range from 7- to 8-inches.
  • The Highlander gets either a 6.1- or 8-inch touchscreen. The 2018 model lacks Apple CarPlayâ„¢/Android Autoâ„¢. Toyota is planning to release at least Apple CarPlayâ„¢ to future new Toyota models, but it's unclear when the Highlander will get it or when Android Autoâ„¢ will be available!

Safety

  • The Highlander comes equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense package. With it you'll get lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, pre-collision alert with pedestrian detection, and dynamic radar cruise control. Another available technology is blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
  • The Sorento has no advanced safety package, but the features are sprinkled across the lineup. The Sorento has similar offerings to the Highlander plus parking sensors for the front and the rear bumpers, forward collision warning, and a driver attention warning!

What's Next?

Performance wise, the Highlander has an edge over the Sorento, but if you value legroom, stronger smartphone technology, and want a few extra advanced safety features, you should check out the Kia Sorento! Stop in this week for a test drive.
